Jacqueline: I believe the bidet idea came from the Islamic World. At one time Islamic Spain was a "light" in Europe in terms of science, technology, medicine, hygiene.

In our religion Muslims wash every time when visiting the toilet - both for urination and excretion. We have to be extra particular about keeping the body and clothes free from impurities (urine, stool) otherwise the 5 daily prayers would be invalid.

To assist in this, men always urinate sitting down so that urine is not (accidentally) splashed on the seat, floor, clothes and body.

As people have said, tissue is not really enough, a combination of tissue and water is the best method. In Muslim nations - hand-held bidets or watering cans are common.

No clue why bidets are not yet mainstream in the US despite it being an ancient invention. Why do we continue to accept filthiness whilst labeling ourselves modern humans? It is difficult to buy a bidet here. Some retailers have never heard the term before! Can you actually believe that!?

My thoughts exactly. Sad that Americans still don't use a bidet... can't believe I didn't grow up using one. I have one installed in every bathroom in my house.

I agree that bidets are more effective at cleaning up after you "go". Since I met my husband, who is from Egypt, I have had a bidet in my home and cannot imagine how I ever lived without it! I used to use baby wipes as an alternative to toilet paper, but a bidet it easier and cheaper. Every bathroom in every home in the world should have one.
To cleaner butts everywhere! :)
